Definitions:
(1) Academic Year. The period from the official commencement of classes at the education institution until the official ending of
classes or the completion of any required examinations, whichever is later.
The academic year in Northern Hemisphere typically starts in August or September and ends in May, June or July.
The academic year in Southern Hemisphere typically aligns to the calendar year, i.e., starting in February or March and ending in
October to December.
(2) Primary Level. Compulsory education that includes kindergarten and grade (class) 1st to 9th (typical ages from 4-5 to 13-15).
Note Staff Rule 6.14 para 2.09: Eligibility for education benefits may not commence earlier than the start of the academic year
during which the dependent child's fifth birthday falls.
(3) Secondary Level. Schooling after the compulsory primary one and before university. Secondary education is the one offered from
the grade (class) 10th to 12th included (typical ages 14-15 to 18-19).
(4) University Level. Higher education at an accredited college or university which offers programs leading to a degree or diploma
over the course of an academic year or years (covered up to age 24, or 25 if the child has been in a military service for 6 months
during the studies).
(5) Apprenticeship. Studies under a recognized professional program in order to qualify for a vocation which requires licensing, or
which is an integral part of a course leading to a degree or diploma (covered up to age 24, or 25 if the child has been in a military
service for 6 months during the studies).
(6) Attendance Period. The period during which the child is enrolled in the educational institution.
Note: Summer academic programs other than those at the same academic institution and campus attended during the preceding,
regular academic year do not qualify for Education Benefits.
